May 18, 2025: LGBTQ Children in Orthodox Day Schools

On Sunday, May 18, at 8PM EDT, PORAT, Eshel, Jofa, Yeshivat Maharat, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah and Uri L’Tzedek will present “LGBTQ Children in Orthodox Day Schools.”  We will hear from parents and students, moderated by Dr. Jeremy Novich, Clinical Director at JQY.  This will be an opportunity to hear about what is working and what can be improved in our Jewish day schools.  Please join us on May 18 by registering at https://bit.ly/LGBTQChildren.  There is no charge to attend.

This program is especially timely given the recent settlement recognizing Hareni, the LGBTQ student club at Yeshiva University.  Rather than focus on halachic issues, our program will address how the decisions our Jewish day schools make affect the lives of LGBTQ students and their families.  Some of the public reaction to the recent settlement suggests that our community has room for improvement in this area.  PORAT recognizes the primacy of Torah and halachic values, and we believe that these values demand that we support efforts to create inclusive and caring environments.  Please join us on May 18 to demonstrate your support for creating a community that emphasizes ahavat Yisrael, love for every other Jew.  In this regard, if you haven’t watched our program on the importance of welcoming LGBTQ Jews in our shuls, please check out the recording on our website – www.poratonline.org/events.
